Kicking My Stride to the Curb

Ever since last May when I found out about all of my food/environmental allergies, I have been detoxifying my life. The first wave was obviously cleansing my diet. The next phase was household items, makeup, lotions, and soaps. The last lingering change I’ve been neglecting is my gum habit. I mean who doesn’t like gum right– Especially gum that lasts for hours and is your favorite flavor? To counteract my fear of bad breath, I’ve been chewing Stride since I was in high school. Everyday I open the tiny rectangles and pop in that burst of freshness. Gum is my safety blanket. However, now that we are trying for our Rainbow Baby, I need to finish the last piece of my clean-life puzzle.

Simply Gum is a brand I came across many many times at Whole Foods. I always saw it in the checkout lines just screaming my name. However, since I was already satisfied (and probably chewing) with my Stride, I took a glance and continued on with my life. Nowadays, with it being “go time” for prime rainbow baby-trying, I decided over the past weekend that it was imperative to kick Stride to the curb. Why is Stride so bad you ask?

“Normal chewing gum in grocery and convenient store is filled with artificial substances, including some of the same components used in the manufacture of car tires, plastic bottles, and white glue, as well as artificial sweeteners like aspartame.” What’s aspartame? Aspartame is an artificial sweetener used in a crap ton of foods and products. Not only is it not broken down by the body, but it has been linked to a ton of health issues.

Consumers are kept in the dark about what they are chewing because the FDA allows conventional gum brands to hide up to 80 synthetic ingredients in the catch-all term “gum base” on the label. Although there are a few gum brands in the US market claiming to be “natural,” all of them include synthetics in their base.”

Pretty creepy huh? I’ve been knowingly consuming this trash in my gum and other snacks all of this time. I’m glad preparing for the rainbow had finally made me come to my senses.

Keeki and Franklin are helping showcase my favorite flavors from Simply Gum (from favorite to least):

Cinnamon – Growing up as a lover of Big Red and Fall flavored items, I LOVE LOVE LOVE cinnamon. Out of all of the flavors, cinnamon is definitely my favorite. Plus, this flavor lasts the longest (about 1-1.5h)

Ginger – Suprising huh? Ever since I became aware of my autoimmune disorders, I’ve added ginger into a daily part of my diet. Besides all of it’s great health effects (helps with inflammation and digestion), I love the flavor. It keeps my head thinking about health rather than all of my cravings.

Mint – A classic flavor that does exactly what it’s supposed to do, promote fresh breath. Frank fancies it too.

Coffee – Before I was pregnant, I did the Bullet Proof diet religiously and now that I’m not longer pregnant, I’ve allowed myself coffee a few times a week. If I finish my once a day cup of caffeine and still want the flavor, I pop in one or two of the coffee pieces.

Fennel Licorice – This is definitely the most interesting flavor of the bunch. Although I love fennel and licorice, I’m not too crazy about chewing it….neither is my husband with my fennel breath.

Maple – I had such high hopes for this flavor. I mean come on, maple is a fall, warm, and syrupy taste, however, this flavor didn’t last very long. Probably 10 minutes top. (SG please make this flavor last longer because it has real potential !)
